Beach Walk 561 – Sometimes It Is Hard

Rain for weeks now.

Software failures. Camera breaks at the beach. Water closed from sewer overflow caused by rain. Such is the cycle of life the past 24 hours. Nonetheless, we have an episode for you!

Beach Walk 253 – Go With The Flow

Going with the flow, even when it’s muddy brown.

Three days of rain: highways closed due to mudslides, beaches closed due to overflow and runoff. Living on an island means you can’t so easily walk away from your problems. Instead, we get instant feedback from the weather and our own collective habits of mismanaged development.

This is February weather. What’s up anyway?

Beach Walk 99 – #2 Creates Confusion

I don’t think there are #3’s – the #2 just gets easily confused.

h3. About Today’s Show

Jayne submitted a 100th Show Promo and raised a really good point: is there a #3 in addition to the #2? It’s quite easy to hear competing points of view in the midst of all the mental chatter.

I think there is just the #2, though s/he is an expert at being confused, and therefore simultaneously lobbying for opposite action!

Beach Walk 98 – Kailua Beach Clean-up

Today’s show is about the beach clean up over Memorial Day weekend.

h3. About Today’s Show

You’ve probably not noticed the garbage that can accumulate along our beautiful beaches here in Hawaii. Maybe you are seeing the big picture in the videos (plenty of beauty to be sure) or maybe the video is too small.

Nonetheless, we have plenty of trash left by beach visitors and washed ashore from ships alike. Kailua Sailboards sponsored their second annual beach clean up. If you signed up to clean up a stretch of the beach, you could earn two hours of free kayak rental. They provided the bags and were having the trash analyzed afterwards, for the latest in “trash trends.”

In our short walk of about 300 yards, we filled a big kitchen bag with dirty diapers, soda and beer cans of course, lots of plastic, and countless cigarrette butts.

Beach Walk 63 – Good News, Bad News

Kathy from Colorado says there are a lot more turtles than 30 years ago.

h3. About Today’s Show

Rumors are flying around here about whether the water in Waikiki is really safe for swimming or not. Since this island thrives on tourism, traditional wisdom says to get that water open as fast as possible. This century though, people are more interested in the truth. Everyone I know would rather wait than get an infection. But the officials are under a lot of pressure from (?? who I wonder?) to open the beaches. It’s a risk game, where those in the know take a risk with our health, instead of informing us, and letting each of us decide whether to take the risk or not. Everywhere I turn, I see people wanting the knowledge to exercise their power.

Aloha to Kathy from Colorado for stopping by to tell us about the turtle comeback.

Tip: If you leave a message on the conch, please speak up so we can hear you! It’s noisy out there by the wind and waves. 🙂
