Beach Walk 539 – Brain Moves

Normal thinking would suggest that doing mental activities like sudoku or playing computer games would be good for the brain.

But research actually shows that physical exercise has more positive impact on mental functioning, even reducing risks of dementia! It’s one of those counter intuitive realities that I just love tripping across.

Hawaiian Word:
Lolo: brain

Beach Walk 339 – Get Fit with Rox

I’m getting a Nike Plus for my iPod. Anybody else want to help each other get fit?

A while ago, Secret Cameraman got a Nike Plus which is a gadget that connects to your iPod and along with a show sensor, measures the miles you walk/run. It then tracks it for you in this beautiful online interface and allows you to connect with others in setting goals, etc.

I’ve been missing a fair amount of my regular exercise, so I bought one today with the hope that a new gadget will help me get back on track. If you already use a Plus or just want to set some goals that we in the Beach Walks community can support you in meeting, then please leave me a comment and we’ll figure out a way to make it happen.

What are your goals? Do you find fitness easy or challenging or irrelevant?

Hawaiian words
Holoholo: to take a walk
Hoʻoholo: to run, move swiftly
Hana like: to do together

Beach Walk 317 – Routine in the Flow

Ze Frank inspired me today; maneuvering between being in the flow with keeping a routine.

I find having routines for some things to be very helpful – exercise for one. I often don’t feel like it, but I know I always feel better afterwords. So having a routine comes in handy.

But as Ze talked about in his show baseline on December 19, 2006, energy is more of a wave than a straight line. Today I came to swim, but it was really rough water so I opted out and did some extra house work! Notice how several feet of beach was carved away by last night’s storm.

Hawaiian words
Kahe: flow
Moʻokiʻina: routine

h3. About Today’s Show

So I heard yet more “research reported on NPR” yesterday that exercise actually affects your brain neurology. All those school systems that dropped PE, arts, and music in favor of boosting test scores in academics? Well, it back-fired. Turns out kids learn more, faster when they have regular exercise.

To me, the point is that doing more and more of the same thing, can produce a counter-effective result. Economists call it the law of diminishing returns, and it actually is in play all over the place!

So what are you struggling with that might actually be improved by doing the opposite? Or at least by taking a break from what you are so focused on? Me? I am going out paddling in the outrigger canoe to drain off a little mental stress and breathe in some of Pacific beauty.
