Beach Walk 707 – The Race Against Racism

Do you think of yourself as a racist? Chances are no, That doesn’t mean you don’t have latent racism. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the NY Times that really helps to explain it.

Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously.

The cure? Out yourself when you have a racist thought, even if it’s embarrassing. It helps I think to flush up those legacy thoughts that have been passed down from generation to generation, just like, “put a coat on or you’ll catch a cold!” Paying attention and breaking the habit – that does work.

Welcome back to Hawaii Barack Obama. I filmed this before I knew of your impending visit.

Beach Walk 82 – Family Day at the Beach

A beautiful, sunny day for a walk on the beach.

h3. About Today’s Show

Mahalo to guest director Mei, and to Kris for being on the show today. It was a gorgeous sunny morning, as we walked the beach talking about paddling and meeting lots of new friends. You might remember Kris from show #64, “Lost – No just wandering.” (She is an Assistant Director on the TV show, Lost.)

On the beach, everybody is one big ‘ohana. There are no barriers, no formalities, just stop and talk, play hopscotch, dig in the sand. I love this freedom to intermingle with others, carefree and open.

Beach Walk 81 – Bring on the Promos!

Start thinking about submitting a promo for Beach Walks. 🙂

h3. About Today’s Show

The camera was showing a blinking red battery so instead of my usual meandering meditation I decided to announce our just hatched idea for a contest. In acknowledgment of our upcoming 100th show, we’d like to invite you to submit a promo or testimonial for what you like about Beach Walks. It can be written text, audio, or video. You are welcome to use whatever excerpts from the shows you like. My job is to go out and raise several hundred dollars worth of goodies from Hawaii so the winners are well rewarded.

So start thinking, I’ll post a page with details over the weekend. I’m decent enough at talking unscripted without a tele-prompter, but I am looking to you for what you love about the show and a creative way to deliver your message. My “what you see is what you get” approach leaves a lot of unexplored options! I haven’t figured out how we’ll set up the voting, so if anyone has an idea, please let us know.

P.S. Please enjoy the little moon rise and mahalo to Philipa and Crikey (sp?) for saying hello on the beach!
