Beach Walk 735 – Spring Bikini Edition

I’ve been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis aka the Bikini Liberation Front. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have – it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Wayne Dyer once said something very apropos here: “What you think of me is none of my business.” So if you find yourself wanting to wear a bikini this summer, it just may be that all that needs to get in shape is your mind!

Beach Walk 669 – Bikini Madness!

Seems every year or so I get in the mood for a bikini show. You realize here in Hawaii they are common – on all ages and all sizes. But reading about this research in Belgium and by Carnegie Mellon, I realize they are a hot topic for the study of neuroeconomics. Bottom line: men get stupid in front of bikini-wearing women, and spend more money on things they don’t necessarily want. One way to break that is to desensitize, to present bikinis in normal context (not the usual seductive poses.) Helen Mirren is a role model for many and at 62 still wears a bikini.

And to the women who won’t wear one? Other side of same coin! Who cares how you look? Swimming and sunning with a bare tummy sure feels awful nice. 20 years ago, when I arguably had a much “better” body, I would not have filmed this. Today, who cares?

Beach Walk 436 – Bikini Culture, Internet Culture

Patricia Lange, a fellow at the Annenberg Center for Communication, wrote an article for the Barnard Center for Research on Women discussing in part how I use bikinis occasionally on Beach Walks specifically to be true to our local beach culture and to break the stereotypes associated with them. She did a lovely job; I recommend you go read the article.

In thinking about culture, I also remarked that the internet is a culture of its own too. CC Chapman recently congratulated a caller who had reported on his progress leaving comments on websites. That was a homework assignment CC gave at his PodCamp New York session. And one I suggest often also! It’s a great way to have a cross-cultural experience.

It’s possible have a cross-cultural experience just by visiting the person across the hall or across the street from you!

Philip called from LA talking about blondes, bikinis, and bimbo-factors.

Let’s face it, this show is not your typical bikini beach show. Yes, there are beaches and bikinis, but our discussions together really encompass so much more.

The “wardrobe” really is just a glimpse into my life. I don’t do the show so I can wear a bathing suit. I do the show because I like sharing a little bit of my world with you. The show occurs when it’s convenient and efficient for me, and that usually means when Lexi and I go for our daily beach walk and swim.

That said, I am aware of the usual bikini/blonde/bimbo associations and I intentionally am trying to break that energy. It’s one small step away from stereotyping. It’s all about the energy for me, being curious instead of critical, seeking freedom not judgment.

You play a role as well, being able to see past the superficial and into something else that apparently holds your interest. 🙂 I guess that means together we are eliminating a few prejudices and I like that.

About Today’s Show

Today, I realized a very simple thing: with video camera in tow, I am emboldened to walk up to people and start up conversations that previously, I refrained from. Producing Beach Walks has inspired me reach out and actually get to know more people in my own community. It occurs to me that many of us hold ourselves back – from adventure, from curiosity, from connections, from wearing a bikini (!) because of a generic problem: only certain people are allowed to do certain things.

What would you do today if you didn’t need someone else’s (or heaven forbid, “society’s”) permission or approval?
