Beach Walk 763R – Memorial Day in the Pacific

We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true essence of Beach Walks – even though it was not filmed on a beach! It was completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. Today’s show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this “punchbowl” of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos.

Beach Walk 752 – Random Lexi Dogg

I am out of town and left my intended footage back on my main hard drive so I found this remnant from last winter!

It’s got a mood to it I think, and it’s dedicated to dog lovers and long shadows everywhere. The sound is minimal – just the sweet romancing rhythms of gentle late afternoon waves. Co-mingled with Lexi’s steady breathing, and a reminder from my friend Lola Jones to “breathe for pleasure.” I hope we at Beach Walks can cast a shadow of grace on you today. Mahalo for your patience in our absence.

Hawaiian word:
hoʻoaka: to cast a shadow

Beach Walk 683 – The Past is Gone

More Twitter inspiration, this time from my friend in the Bay Area Jen Myronuk. There is a very popular sentiment – to reminisce on the past and believe that things back then were “always better” that life today is a mess and getting messier. I choose not to go there today. It does not serve me to think the good old days are all gone. I know change is easier for some than others, but really, isn’t that 101 stuff right? Why be sad over things we cannot change when we can put energy on the things we can affect, the people we do love? Pleas join me in the I kēia manawa; it’s pretty cool too.

Hawaiian Word:
Ka wā i hala: past
I kēia manawa: now

Beach Walk 625 – Have you heard Reef Radio?

Back in January we launched our social community, The Reef.

It’s a great place to hang out and meet the brilliant wonderful people who watch and love Beach Walks! Yes, it is free. And you can create your own pages and upload your own pictures, music, and videos.

We have just now released Reef Radio! It’s a keiki (child) for now, but you can start listening to our downtempo and contemporary Hawaiian music. Coming soon we’ll be inserting Beach Walks excerpts and also opening it up to screened, like-minded advertisers.

P.S. I will be at Podcamp NYC this Fri and Sat.

Hawaiian word:
Lekiō: radio
