Beach Walk 531 – Art: Do it for yourself first!

Many of you have been following my 83 year old Mom’s coming out party as an artist.

Here is a quick review of her art show held last month. She really has some good ideas about art and about doing things to please yourself – a perfect fit with our Beach Walks philosophy!

Beach Walk 513 – My Mother, The Artist

Today starts at the beach (a gorgeous day!) then cuts to a video chat with my mom, Blanche Benton, who is 83 (though she forgets occasionally!).

She has become a great technology user and little did we know, she has a collection of paintings and drawings done over the years, never before seen. She is planning an art show next week, and I wanted her to tell you what a positive effect this has had on her, in her own words.

Beach Walk 499 – Visualize Your World

Great inspiration for a Monday!

Meet my guests Marliss and Steve Jensen of Minneapolis, MN. They are both artists, and both consciously visualize the world they want to live in. And you get a chance to learn a little about the Hawaiian state fish: Humuhumnukukuapuaʻa.

Update: Marliss and Steve have launched their new web site! Please check it out:

Beach Walk 234 OTR – Malcolm Breaks the Mold

Malcolm Alexander turns dyslexia into a thriving art career.

For those of you who are new here, I usually walk the beach with my dog Lexi in Hawai’i. But I am on the road traveling for my job, so you get to come along with me! I like to think of Beach Walks as much as an attitude as a place. A place where we explore the edges of the known world, and think differently.

Malcolm Alexander is a Santa Fe artist, with seemingly endless fascinating stories. A dyslexic child of an auto engineer father, he struggled to keep up with school and family expectations. But he is persistent and creative! His early work was largely in tribute to both athletes and the workers who built much of America – farm workers, oil field workers, and miners. In the mid-80’s he made a dramatic switch from representational sculpture to abstract art.

He speaks to may groups on dyslexia and continues to create large bronze sculptures that can be seen at Ventana Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.

Beach Walk 226 OTR – Santa Fe Gallery Walk

Walk with me along Canyon Rd in Santa Fe to attend some gallery openings.

For those of you who are new here, I usually walk the beach with my dog Lexi in Hawai’i. But I am on the road traveling for my job, so you get to come along with me! I like to think of Beach Walks as much as an attitude as a place. A place where we explore the edges of the known world, and think differently.

“An artist’s world is limitless.”
– Paul Strand

My mom is a great fan of this show, and I am thinking of hiring her as a consultant. It was her idea to do the gallery walk while I am here working in Santa Fe. Working solo without Secret Cameraman, I am a little reluctant to march into crowded gatherings. Indeed, within the first block I had a gallery security guard approach me with a stern “no filming” admonishment before I had even set foot on their property! It was fine though, as it helped me get mentally prepared to collect my footage. Grace showed up, and I was able to meet two talented artists:
Rick Stevens, represented by the Hunter Kirkland Contemporary Gallery
Lynne Loshbaugh, represented by the Hahn Ross Gallery
Thank you to both galleries and artists for inviting us into your world.
