Beach Walk 745 – USS Nimitz Steel Beach #2

Meet Captain Mike Manazir, who tells us to ask any question, take pictures and videos, talk to the sailors, no restrictions. Right away with the Captain you will get a feeling for the people on board. One of my fellow travelers, Olwen Huxley, summed it up perfectly: I got on the Nimitz “wow, the technology” and got off the Nimitz “wow, the people.”

Beach Walk 744 – USS Nimitz Steel Beach #1

Who knew after all my disco years dancing to the tune of “in the navy” I would be a DV (Distinguished Visitor) on a US Navy aircraft carrier? Who knew a former anti-war protester from UC Berkeley would be invited aboard a war ship, free to roam the ship unsupervised? Shane and I spent an overnight on the USS Nimitz – a 4.5 acre steel beach. We’ve got several episodes for you, as of course we couldn’t go alone! Part One is the getting there, via a COD flight with an arrested landing. This episode starts off with a briefing from Public Affairs Officer Theresa Donnelly; you can follow her (and her boxer!) on Twitter. I have to say it was especially cool having our arrival announced on Twitter too.

Beach Walk 729R – Bill Explains How to Be Bionic

My Dad died yesterday. A year ago I filmed this episode with him – and with no more than a minute’s notice, he told us the secrets to his long and happy life. It has not been without struggles and considerable pain, but he knows where to keep his focus, and has surely been rewarded for it. You can learn more about him at www.williampbenton.com.

My Beach Walks episodes have been few and far between these past few months as Shane and I have chosen to spend more time with my family. I think you can see why in this episode, and I haven’t even touched on the strengths my mother possesses!

You can see the original post and the very many comments here.

Beach Walk 626 – The Innocence of Jeffrey Deskovic

Imagine you were arrested at age 16 for a rape and murder you did not commit.

You were held and questioned without parents or a lawyer. You were eventually convicted (despite contradictory DNA evidence), and served 17 years in jail. Wrongful incarceration for nearly two decades.

The result is Jeffrey Deskovic, and I am amazed at the grace and light that is he. A few months ago I read the amazing true story of Jeffrey Deskovic. He is still a young man who has been through some amazing trials already, and yet has come through them with grace and strength. I invited him to the Podcamp NYC conference to meet other new media creators for interviews, and to learn how to use this technology to further his own message. Our episode barely scratched the surface – I hope you will check out these other links.

Beach Walk 608 OTR – Pups of Palm Beach

My visit with my parents in Florida has had its share of stress; my main tonic has been walking to Starbucks many mornings with friends and enjoying all of the dogs.

On Saturday there is a Farmer’s Market, and even more dogs! Mahalo to Bob and Anna, David, Sam, Amber, and Barbara for their dog stories. And big wet kisses to all the dogs who give us so much love and joy: Teddy, Winston, Savannah, Bowser, Rica, Molly, Harry and all of you wonders whose names I don’t know!

Mahalo also to Glenn Jones for his perfect song, “Little Dog’s Day.”
