Beach Walk 761 – Kani Ka Pila at Ulupalakua Ranch

We’re on Maui! Meet musician George Kahumoku at the Ulupalakua Ranch.

I was hired by the Maui Visitors Bureau to assemble a team of new media bloggers and podcasters to participate in a week-long press trip to Maui. You are the lucky beneficiaries! In this second episode, filmed on-site at the Ulupalakua Ranch, I introduce you to George Kahumoku, a slack key guitarist and multi-talented person – like so many Hawaiians! You must watch this to learn about his many talents. I love the title of today’s episode as it has the rhythm of the Hawaiian language in these long yet simple words. Just say each one slowly as it is written; or do as my friend Shel Israel suggests, and say it 10 times fast!

Please go explore the VisitMauiBlog for more stories, photos, and videos of our week on Maui. It is the perfect way to spend a little time on Maui and to plan your next vacation or business retreat. Mahalo nui to the Maui Visitors Bureau for inviting us to be their guests.

Hawaiian word:
Kani ka pila: play music (an afternoon tradition in Hawaii)
Ulu: to grow, spread, protect
Palakua: to ripen to perfection

Beach Walk 757 – Waves Washing Over Us

This walk on the beach in Maui is a type of shadow play and a rare glimpse of seeing Secret Cameraman at work!

This is a little venture into avante garde film-making, as the camera perspective and what you see on screen is a bit unusual. No talking, just walking and some gorgeous waves here to wash away whatever shadows may be dogging any of us. On a side note, I had the most fun interview ever with Dave Moyer and Kym Huynh of Wordcast Conversations and they got me all energized to post a new episode! I’ll post the link to it when it goes live.

Please visit Kenneth Makuakane’s web site to learn more about his new CD, The Dash. I think his music works perfectly in this episode and he is so generous to share it with us.

hoʻoaka: to cast a shadow

Beach Walk 723R – Come Join with Me

Originally aired on February 29, 2008:
I cannot stop watching this episode! It was shot by moi, on the little Sanyo Xacti, there are water drops on the lens, it is a little over-exposed and a lot shaky, and of course I wanted more shots. But there was magic on the beach with Lexi this day. Then I heard this beautiful song on Dave’s Lounge #106 and I had to put these ingredients together. Sometimes the energy is so much more than the technique – this is true for me, today.

This episode is dedicated to each of you loyal viewers, who so generously receive whatever we share, who shower us with love and affection, who even travel all the way from Canada (and soon from the UK I hope) and share some of your precious vacation time with us.

I don’t know how to thank the Shanghai Restoration Project featuring Di Johnston for this beautiful song. I already purchased two copies of the album on http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=271612686&s=143441. I hope you will purchase their music to encourage more of this in our world. As for Dave, I have listened to his podcast from the first episode, and he stands in rare company to have been so focused from the start, and he only gets better.

Beach Walk 641 – Wise Words with Cubworld

We all met Cubworld back in Episode 465 and Episode 466, and more recently, heard his amazing song, Wise Words, on Episode 632 – Island Adventure. He is the second person to qualify on Sellaband which is a social network site for emerging musicians. Born in Tonga, Cubworld has resisted his musical urges in favor of fine art for many years, but the song keeps coming back to him, and it’s easy for us to see why. Watch and listen as he talks about being an independent musician and plays for us too.

If you are local, you can go to his concert this Friday night at BYU Auditorium in Laʻie.

Beach Walk 639R – Kailua Beach Clean-up

Every year the local shop, Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, hosts a beach clean up. If you fill a bag with collected trash, they’ll give you a coupon for two hours of free kayak rental. We did this episode originally in 2006, and I still really like it, despite the somewhat discouraging reason for being at the beach. OTOH, we have some great music from JRoQ, and I love Shane’s editing too.

So come on down to Kailua Beach this Sunday, help us clean up and get a free coupon for 2 hours on our beautiful bay!
