Beach Walk 404 – Selfish Nature

A message on my niece’s IM inspired me to think about the nature of selfishness.

“If I give in, what do I give up?”

That’s a challenging question for me, and for people who lean toward being “generous to a fault.” I sometimes think of how this flow works out in nature. Animals are intrinsically selfish, and yet somehow it all works out beautifully.

  1. the line that i had up about giving in and giving up actually comes from one of my favorite songs-“California Waiting” by Kings of Leon. what is especially resonant in that particular lyric (“by giving in what am i giving up?”) is how it applies to relationships. it seems like a lot of times people take for granted what another is doing for them, and others get lost in trying to do everything for another. anyway, to me this is one of the most beautiful songs, both lyrically and musically. here are all the lyrics, maybe it will strike a chord (ha, my attempt at a musical pun) with some of you other beachwalkers out there…and check out itunes for the song itself!

little mona lisa layin by my side
    crimson and clover pullin overtime
i feel too close to be losin touch
by giving in, what am i giving up?
am i losing way too much?

    but hey, california waiting
every little thing’s gonna be just right
say, why you trying to save me?
can i get back my lonely life?

im goin so fast and i cant slow down
its hard to get up when youre spinnin round and round
id give you the news, but nothin’s changed
id sing you a song but they threw it away
all wrapped up in your stupid ass game

    but hey, california waiting
every little thing’s gonna be just right
say, why you trying to save me?
can i get back my lonely life?

  2. great comment carlie — and if anyone wants to buy the album, here’s the link to it on Bare Feet Shop. We earn a few pennies on each sale.

I hope you’re in person the next time you’re on the show carlie!
