My friend Stacey tells us about the phases of parenting. It’s hard to be good at every step.
I had never thought of it this way, and it makes so much sense! We can’t all be good at everything. I think this knowledge can help take some of the stress out of parenting. I think it also helps kids give their parents a little slack too. Most parents really are doing their best after all I believe.

We’re in what they call the sandwich generation. We still have to parent our youngest, who’s struggling to make it on her own, and on the other side we also have to be parents to my mother-in-law, who’s pushing 90 and just recently started to “lose it” a little. Having to parent a parent is a very difficult thing, especially with those who still think they’re the parents.
I think each day we learn something about ourselves when we become parents. We have to make choices…not for ourselves…but for the bundle of joy that we have brought into the world. Some days are tough…but the good days will always shine in our memories.
That whole thing about learning about ourselves is one of the juiciest parts of relationship IMO. And the parent-child relationship? It hardly gets more probing than that, eh?
Not having children of my own, I don’t know that part of the process. But I am enjoying being helpful and supportive to my parents (in their 80’s). And as Stacey knows, I am on call 24-7 for Kaile, who is a real gift in my life!
