I am celebrating selfishness today.
h3. About Today’s Show
There are certain words that are so loaded with emotional charge, often unfairly and inaccurately. One of them is “selfish.” Most people’s first reaction is negative. But the airlines start every flight reminding parents to put on their mask first, in the event of a loss of cabin pressure.
From wikipedia – “Selfishness is a primary or sole concern with one’s own welfare.”
As we develop the ability to have more complex understanding of our emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual aspects, we are also learning how to apply nuance to specific situations and to reclaim the language from its all or nothing connotations.
I could certainly cite plenty of examples from my own past where my concern for others at the expense of myself actually caused more harm than good.
So try on a selfish act or two this weekend in service of nurturing yourself, and let me know how it turns out!
Hawaiian words Both of these words came up when I entered “selfish.”
ʻauʻa: stingy
noʻo.noʻo: to think, reflect, meditate

Only yesterday I was chatting with a Reiki practitioner and made the comment that I felt that before someone could begin to heal others, they need to be reasonably balanced within themselves first, or at least have a good heart and intentions. So your comments about being selfish do resonate with me. It’s a hard concept, as you touched on, because we are told that it is wrong. In fact it is bad. But as a case in point, you had your yoga class and you cleared those thoughts away, and on the show you were happy and smiling… we would have been none the wiser if you hadnt shared those thoughts!
As for doing the show: I for one have been amazed at your consistency. When I watched the first show, I thought it would be a weekly/occasional vlog with you walking Lex around the beach and we’d just get a sneak peek at life on the islands, but I think you can tell from your audience that we enjoy getting so much more.
I know that for myself, I like knowing that there are people out there like yourself, with your heart and soul in the right place and it comes across in your vlogs.. maybe it’s because i’m in the UK hustle and bustle, but your vlog is so relaxing a and at the same time thought provoking.
And isn’t it just cool to know that there are people in all those different countries that dont know each other and never will and yet we all have something in common – we all get a little bit of pleasure out of beachwalks.tv.
As long as you love doing it, we’ll be there to watch, daily, weekly.. whenever.
Greetings from the UK
Matt
Mahalo for your fabulous comment Matt. Most of my life I have been searching for like-minded souls, and I am so happy we are all finding each other via Beach Walks. My life has plenty of hustle and frustration too, which is why I am so grateful for the opportunity to be learning how to live aloha.
I find these comments and kindness so inspiring and really appreciate your taking the time to stop by and share your thoughts. And that goes to all of you who are commenting on the blog and emailing me privately!
